The program is designed for advanced PhD students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their PhD) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will be working under the direct mentorship of an experienced IIASA scientist in a unique interdisciplinary and international research environment. They will produce a paper (serving as the first step towards a publishable journal article) and will get the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institute’s worldwide network.

Applicants from all countries are welcome, although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of National Member Organizations (NMO) countries.
Participation in the YSSP is only possible for one summer (however, you may apply several times) and you will need to be present at the institute (i.e. no fieldwork or working remotely) for the full duration of the program.

Applications to the 2023 program will open on 6 October 2022 (12 PM CEST) and run until 12 January 2023 (midnight CEST). Two letters of reference are required (to be received by the latest 24 hrs past the application deadline).

Benefits
- The fellowship covers the cost of travel to and from Vienna and the awardee’s home country at the beginning and end of the fellowship, as well as a modest stipend to offset living expenses during the period of the fellowship.
- You will receive a stipend worth 1,500 EUR per month. IIASA does not provide housing or additional funding for housing.
- IIASA will also finance up to 3 candidates from developing countries which are not members of IIASA
Eligibilities

- Candidates are required to have experience in writing about science for the general public via blogs, newspapers, university websites, or other outlets.
- You must demonstrate written and oral fluency in English and a proven ability to understand complex scientific research.
