Call for Shandong University Government Scholarship 2024 is open now!!! 

The Chinese Government Scholarship Program (Type B) is a full scholarship program for international students established by the Chinese Ministry of Education. Entrusted by the Ministry of Education of China, Shandong University recruits outstanding international students from around the world to pursue bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Categories of Applicants:

  • Undergraduates (Chinese-taught Programs only)
  • Postgraduates (Chinese or English-taught Programs)
  • Doctoral candidates (Chinese or English-taught Programs)

 In order to enhance mutual understanding and friendship between the Chinese people and people around the world, and to develop exchanges and cooperation between China and countries around the world in various fields, the Chinese government has established scholarships to fund outstanding students and scholars from all over the world to study or conduct research in Chinese institutions.

The Ministry of Education of China has entrusted the China Scholarship Council (hereinafter referred to as the “Chinese Scholarship Council”) to be responsible for the admission and management of Chinese government scholarship students.

Shandong University, or SDU – under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education – is a key comprehensive university with a long and honorable history, a broad variety of disciplines, strong academic strength and distinctive characteristics, which has had a great influence both at home and abroad. In 2017, the SDU was chosen as one of the first group of China’s high-level universities to be listed in the double first-class university program released by the central government of China.

Shandong University is one of the initiative universities of modern Chinese higher education. Its medical school, established in 1864, signified the beginning of modern Chinese higher education. Its main body – the Shandong Imperial College (Shandong Da Xue Tang) established in 1901 – was the second national university in China, after the Imperial University of Peking. Moreover, it was the first university in China to run in accordance with a chartered constitution.

For around 120 years, SDU has been following its mission to “nurture talent for the world and seek prosperity for the nation” and living up to its motto of being “noble in spirit, endless in knowledge”. The university has cultivated over 600,000 talented young people of various specialties and has been making significant contributions to the country and to regional economic and social development.

  • Applicants must be physically and mentally healthy, and be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport;
  • Academic qualifications and age requirements:
    • Applicants for a bachelor’s degree program should have a high school diploma or equivalent qualification, excellent academic performance, and generally be under 25 years old.
    • Applicants for a master’s degree program should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification, excellent academic performance, and generally be under 35 years old.
    • Applicants for a doctoral degree program should have a master’s degree or equivalent qualification, excellent academic performance, and generally be under 40 years old.
  • Language Requirement:
    • Chinese-taught Programs: Applicants for a bachelor’s degree program must pass the HSK Level 4 examination (score of 210 or above); Applicants for a master’s degree program must pass the HSK Level 5 examination (score of 180 or above); Applicants for a doctoral degree program must pass the HSK Level 6 examination (score of 180 or above). Applicants with the highest degree in Chinese as the language of instruction are exempt from the HSK certificate, but must provide proof of the language of instruction.
    • English-taught Programs: Applicants whose native language is English are exempt from providing English language proficiency certificates. Applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency with an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, TOEFL score of 80 or above (DI code: C296), TOEFL iBT score of 80 or above, Essentials test score of 8 or above, or equivalent English language proficiency certificates. Applicants whose native language is not English but have received their highest level of education taught in English are exempt from providing IELTS/TOEFL certificates and other proof of English proficiency, but must submit proof of the language of instruction.
    • In addition to the English proficiency requirement, applicants for the Master’s degree in Clinical Medicine taught in English must pass the HSK Level 4 examination (score of 180 or above). The certificate is typically valid for 2 years.
  • Applicants must also meet other requirements stated in 2024 Application Instructions for International Students (Bachelor Programs), 2024 Application Instructions for International Students (Master Programs), and 2024 Application Instructions for International Students (Ph.D. Programs).
Eligible Regions: Open for all except Chinese citizens.

Application Process

  • Application Procedure
    • Apply online through the Chinese Government Scholarship (CGS) Application System (https://studyinchina.csc.edu.cn/#/login), select the program type (Type B) and enter the agency number (10422). After completing the application, download the “Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form”
    • Log in to SDU Online Application System for International Students (http://www.apply.sdu.edu.cn) to fill in personal information, upload the required documents and complete the online application. Paper application documents sent by post are not required.
    • Note: Applicants must apply through both of the above systems, or your application will not be accepted by Shandong University.
    • Pay the application fee of 400 RMB (The application is invalid for those who have not paid the application fee. Once the application fee is paid, it will be non-refundable.).
    • All uploaded documents must be in Chinese or English. If the documents are in other languages, the original document and a certified translation in English or Chinese must be uploaded together. Please use a scanner to scan the relevant documents in color, as pictures of documents taken with mobile phones or cameras, as well as photocopies, will not be accepted. Except for the “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” and personal signatures, handwritten documents will not be accepted.
    • Shandong University reserves the right to request applicants to provide the original paper version/notarized documents of the application materials or authentication documents issued by designated certification agencies for further verification.
    • Due to differences in educational systems between certain countries and China, the academic requirements for applicants from these countries may vary. For more information regarding the required qualifications and degrees, please refer to the attached document.
    • Applicants should ensure the authenticity and accuracy of the provided application information and materials. Once the admissions unit or the certification department verifies that the information is untrue, the applicant’s application, admission, or enrollment qualification will be canceled.
    • Chinese Government Scholarship recipients are not allowed to simultaneously receive financial support from other scholarships established by various levels of the Chinese government or admitting institutions. If such a violation is discovered, the Chinese Government Scholarship qualification will be revoked, and the received scholarship funds must be returned. Those who deliberately conceal their sponsorship situation, in addition to disqualification, will be prohibited from applying for the Chinese Government Scholarship within three years.
  • Application materials
    • “Chinese Government Scholarship Application Form” (fill in online);
    • Passport homepage. Applicants must submit a clear scan of the first page of an ordinary passport valid after March 1 , 2023. If the validity period of the current passport does not meet the requirements, please replace it with a new passport in time. For applicants who are unable to apply for a passport before submitting the application due to objective reasons, they can submit a valid certificate or supporting document containing their “English name, gender, nationality, date of birth” and other information with the permission of the accepting agency;
    • Notarized highest academic qualification certificate. If the applicant is a current student, he or she must submit a certificate of expected graduation or a certificate of enrollment issued by the school where he or she is currently attending;
    • Study transcript. Texts other than Chinese and English must be accompanied by a notarized Chinese or English translation;
    • Proof of language proficiency. Applicants who apply to use Chinese as the professional teaching language must provide an HSK score report that is valid and consistent with the corresponding Chinese proficiency requirements . Applicants who apply for a foreign language as the professional teaching language should provide corresponding language proficiency certificates according to the school’s requirements, such as IELTS or TOEFL score sheets;
    • Admission materials. Applicants who apply to study for a master’s degree, a doctoral degree, and students who apply to come to China as general or advanced visiting students should provide admission materials issued by the institution they are applying for, which may include admission notices, pre-admission notices, or tutor invitation letters, etc. (The admission materials will be used as Chinese One of the priority documents for government scholarships);
    • Study or research plan in China. (No less than 200 words for undergraduate students, no less than 500 words for advanced students , and no less than 1,000 words for postgraduate students), written in Chinese or English;
    • Letter of recommendation. Applicants who apply to study for master’s or doctoral degrees and those who apply to come to China as senior visiting students must submit letters of recommendation from two professors or associate professors, written in Chinese or English;
    • Personal works. Applicants who apply to major in art, design, etc. should provide personal work materials (such as images, paintings, etc.);
    • Applicants under the age of 18 must submit relevant legal documents of their legal guardian in China;
    • Applicants who come to China to study for more than 6 months must submit a copy of the “Physical Examination Form for Foreigners” (the original should be kept by yourself. This form is printed by the Chinese health and quarantine department and must be filled out in English). Applicants should strictly follow the items required in the “Physical Examination Form for Foreigners” for examination. The “Physical Examination Form for Foreigners” that is missing items, does not have a photo of the person or a seal on the photo, and does not have the signature and seal of the doctor and hospital is invalid. The inspection results are valid for 6 months;
    • Certificate of no criminal record. Applicants must submit a valid criminal record certificate issued by the local public security authority, which should usually be within 6 months before the date of submission of the application.
