The BP Net Zero Scholarship 2023 is now receiving applications. The world’s carbon budget is finite and running out fast; the world needs a rapid transition to net zero. Increasingly, we all want and need energy that is secure, affordable and has lower carbon. To deliver that, trillions of dollars must be invested in replumbing and rewiring the world’s energy system. It will require nothing short of reimagining energy as we know it.

BP  has set an ambition to become a net zero company by 2050 or sooner, and to help the world get to net zero. This means reducing greenhouse gas emissions from its operations and production, while at the same time growing new lower and zero-carbon businesses, products, and services.

Accelerated and Net Zero explore how different elements of the energy system might change in order to achieve a substantial reduction in carbon emissions. In that sense, they can be viewed as ‘what if’ scenarios: what elements of the energy system might need to change if the world collectively takes action for CO2e-equivalent emissions (CO2e) to fall by around 75% by 2050 (relative to 2019 levels) in Accelerated and 95% in Net Zero. Both scenarios are conditioned on the assumption that there is a significant tightening in climate policies. Net Zero also embodies a shift in societal behavior and preferences which further supports gains in energy efficiency and the adoption of low-carbon energy.

The carbon emissions remaining in Net Zero in 2050 could be eliminated by either additional changes to the energy system or by the deployment of carbon dioxide removal (CDR). This will depend on the costs of CDR and of abating greenhouse gasses emanating from outside the energy system, neither of which are explicitly considered in the Outlook.

As bp aims for net zero, we recognize the value of listening to, learning from, and partnering with others. That’s why bp is pleased to support the Net Zero Scholarship – a program to identify and engage with young innovators who are reimaging energy for people and our planet today.

Scholarship recipients will join bp’s delegation to the One Young World Summit 2023 in Belfast, where they will meet and exchange ideas with peers across the business. The scholarship seeks candidates making an impact in one of the following areas:

  • Advocating for progressive climate policies.
  • Enhancing current decarbonized energy technologies such as solar and wind.
  • Improving access to decarbonized energy.
  • Innovating to reduce emissions in households, regions, cities, and industries.
