Calling all applicants for Google DeepMind Research Ready Programme!

The University of Exeter, in partnership with Google DeepMind, introduces the Research Ready Programme—an exclusive eight-week paid summer internship designed to prepare students for success in the dynamic field of artificial intelligence (AI).

This programme offers participants the opportunity to engage in groundbreaking research projects, enhance their technical expertise, and connect with leading researchers and professionals in the field.

Organized by the Department of Computer Science and supported by the Institute for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (IDSAI), the initiative combines academic mentorship, practical research experience, and professional development workshops, ensuring participants gain skills with real-world applications.

Twelve students will be selected for this transformative programme, which includes a generous stipend, travel support, and complimentary accommodation near the stunning Streatham Campus. While prior research experience is not required, the programme is particularly beneficial for those interested in pursuing postgraduate studies.

The programme includes interactive workshops and seminars to build both technical and transferable skills:

  • Technical training: AI programming, machine learning fundamentals, deep learning modelling, computer vision, reinforcement learning, and natural language processing.
  • Advanced topics: Deep learning frameworks, statistical analysis, feature engineering, evolutionary algorithms, and ethical AI decision-making.
  • Career focus: Explore pathways in academia, research, and industry with guidance from AI professionals and career advisors.
  • The programme will select 12 students to participate, offering a competitive stipend, travel support, and complimentary accommodation near the picturesque Streatham Campus. Prior research experience is not a prerequisite; however, the programme is particularly advantageous for students with an interest in pursuing postgraduate studies.

Eligibilities

Essential criteria (all required)

  • Must be a resident of the UK and eligible to pay UK home fees.
  • Must have the right to live and work full-time in the UK for the duration of the programme.
  • Must be in the penultimate year of their undergraduate degree or have completed an undergraduate degree in computer science, AI, or a related technical field.
  • Must not be currently enrolled in or have completed a Masters or PhD programme.

Socioeconomic criteria (at least one required)

  • Eligible for free school meals during secondary education.
  • Residing in an area ranked in the lowest two deciles according to deprivation indices like IMD or POLAR.
  • Experienced care from a local authority at any point.
  • In receipt of full state support for maintenance during their undergraduate studies.

Application Process

Candidates passing all the Essential criteria and one of the Socioeconomic criteria will be then evaluated across four categories:

  • Academic performance: Scored based on the student’s academic performance in relevant modules.
  • Motivation and potential: Scored based on the personal statement and recommendation letter(s) to identify strong personal drive and commitment to research in AI and alignment with Exeter’s AI research.
  • Equity, diversity, and inclusion: Scored to identify students from underrepresented groups, including women, black, Asian, mixed, and minority ethnic students.
  • Socioeconomic background: Scored on additional socioeconomic factors of financial constraints and access to resources.
