The Brookings Internship Program is a paid, 12-week program for degree-seeking students to gain pre-professional experience in public policy, research, communications, or a related field. Internships are available in a variety of departments and programs at Brookings, including research programs (e.g., Governance Studies, Global Economy and Development, Brookings Metro, Economic Studies, or Foreign Policy) and central business units (e.g., Human Resources, Executive Office, Finance, Development, Facilities, Communications).

Interns are embedded within the day-to-day work at Brookings and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning experiences, including:

  • Working on real-world research and policy projects
  • Learning from leading experts in a variety of fields
  • Networking with other interns, Brookings staff, and other experts in the field of public policy
  • Developing transferable skills such as research, writing, critical thinking, and problem-solving

All Brookings interns are paid, either by Brookings or via external partnership. Internships can be hybrid (requiring at least one day in the office per week) or remote. Interns are required to be physically located in the U.S. for the duration of the internship.

Here are some specific examples of projects that Brookings interns have worked on in the past:

  • Conducting research on the impact of economic inequality on educational outcomes
  • Analyzing the potential impact of climate change on national security
  • Developing recommendations for improving the efficiency of the US healthcare system
  • Writing blog posts and articles on current policy issues
  • Creating social media content to promote Brookings’ research
  • Assisting with the planning and execution of events and conferences

  • Current undergraduate and graduate students
  • Individuals of any background and level of experience
  • International students who have a visa status sponsored by their college or university, or are authorized to work in the U.S.
