The Wallace Stegner Fellowship at Stanford University is inviting working artists who intend to practice and perfect their craft. A degree is not attached to the program and it is seen as more of an artist-in-residence opportunity for promising writers. However, it is very similar to MFA.
The program is disparate from most of its kind. There is no age restriction and no academic requirements. Flourishing writers get the chance to spend two years developing their writing with peers and under the guidance of Stanford faculty.
10 fellowships are given. 5 in poetry and 5 in fiction.
The celebrated writer and environmentalist Wallace Stegner founded the Stanford Creative Writing Program and Writing Fellowships in 1946. At that time, the Iowa Writers Workshop was the only degree-granting institution in the country. Stegner arrived at Stanford from Harvard University with the aim of providing young, talented writers the guidance, encouragement, and funding to further their writing knowledge and craft. “Minds grow by contact with other minds,” Stegner wrote. “The bigger the better, as clouds grow toward thunder by rubbing together.” In the first few years the program provided space for a handful of masters degree students as well as three Writing Fellows. Years later, the fellowships were named in Stegner’s honor.
Stanford Creative Program offers nearly 100 courses a year, ranging from introductory workshops in fiction, nonfiction, and poetry to special projects such as Novel Writing Intensive, Young Adult Fiction, Fiction into Film, and the Stanford Graphic Novel Project. They host dozens of readings, one-day workshops, and events, giving students the opportunity to engage with published writers and explore their creativity beyond the classroom. Students looking to dive deep in creative writing can pursue capstone courses, such as the Levinthal Tutorial, the Hoffs-Roach Tutorial, advanced workshops, and courses with the Stein Visiting Writer and the Mohr Visiting Poet.

- A living stipend of $37,500 per academic year is given along with tuitions and health insurance.
- The graduates can apply for a two-year lectureship teaching undergraduate fiction or poetry at Stanford.
- The fellowship is highly prestigious and participants may become independently successful as writers, some go on to adjunct or tenure-track university teaching positions, or to other fellowship opportunities.
Eligibilities
- The fellows must commit to the program full-time and therefore, cannot do any other job or studies in the duration of the fellowship.
- The fellows must reside close enough to Stanford and be able to attend workshops.
- The manuscript should not exceed 9,000 words for fiction and 10-15 pages for poetry.
