The Mo Ibrahim Foundation is an African foundation founded by Sudanese-British  businessman and philanthropist, Mo Ibrahim. Headquartered in London and Dakar, the Foundation was established in 2006 as a non-grant making organisation. It works to strengthen sound governance and leadership in Africa through its key initiatives:

  • Ibrahim Index of African Governance
  • Ibrahim Prize for Achievement in African Leadership
  • Ibrahim Governance Weekend
  • Ibrahim Fellowships and Scholarships and the Now Generation Network

The Foundation is chaired by Mo Ibrahim. Other board members include Valerie Amos, Jin-Yong Cai, Nathalie Delapalme, Jendayi Frazer, Hadeel Ibrahim, Hosh Ibrahim, Abdoulie Janneh, Donald Kaberuka, Pascal Lamy, Graça Machel, Jay Naidoo, Mary Robinson, Ngaire Woods, and Zeinab Badawi.

Fellowship Institutions

The International Trade Centre: The International Trade Centre (ITC) is a multilateral agency which has a joint mandate with the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations (UN) through the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

The headquarters of the ITC are in Geneva, and the agency employs around 300 employees from over 80 different nationalities.

African Development Bank: The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) or Banque Africaine de Développement (BAD) is a multilateral development finance institution headquartered in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, since September 2014. The AfDB is a financial provider to African governments and private companies investing in the regional member countries (RMC).

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa: The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA or ECA; CEA) was established in 1958 by the United Nations Economic and Social Council to encourage economic cooperation among its member states (the nations of the African continent) following a recommendation of the United Nations General Assembly. It is one of five regional commissions.

The ECA has 54 member states, corresponding to the 54 member states of the United Nations that lie within the continent of Africa or in oceans nearby the continent. The ECA’s mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member states, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa’s development.

The Ibrahim Scholarships support aspiring African leaders at a number of distinguished academic institutions. The scholarships develop the talent of outstanding young Africans in selected disciplines.

Fellowships are open to young professionals, mid-career and new executives from Africa with relevant work experience and a master’s degree.

Benefits

  • Three Fellows have an opportunity to work in the executive offices of the AfDB (Abidjan), ECA (Addis Ababa) or the ITC (Geneva), with a stipend of $100,000.
  • Fellows gain both technical and leadership skills, while contributing directly to research and policy design.
  • Fellows also become members of the Now Generation Network (NGN), through which they continue to contribute their skills and insights to building a better Africa.

Eligibilities

  • National of an African country.
  • Minimum 7 years’ of relevant work experience.
  • Master’s degree.
  • Under the age of 40, or 45 for women with children.
  • Any additional criteria as set by the host.

Application Process

  • Interested candidates should complete the online form at the Bank’s website: https://www.afdb.org/en/vacancy/2024-mo-ibrahim-foundation-leadership-fellowship-program-63501.
  • Applicants must apply online by no later than 20th October 2023.
  • Applications will only be considered if they are submitted on line with a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae (CV) indicating date of birth, nationality, education and relevant experience.
  • Applicants must also attach copies of academic transcripts and three letters of recommendation.
  • The selection process will include the Bank’s Human Resources Department carrying out an initial vetting of applications to develop a short list of ten (10) applicant files to be further reviewed by the Foundation. A short list of three (3) candidates will be presented to the President of the Bank (or his designate) for final selection.
  • Only applicants who fully meet the Bank’s requirements and are considered for interview will be contacted.
