The Asia Foundation (TAF) is a nonprofit, mission-driven international development organization committed to improving lives across a dynamic and developing Asia. Its work across the region focuses on governance, women’s empowerment and gender equality, inclusive economic growth, environment and climate action, and regional and international cooperation. The Foundation’s Let’s Read program is a free digital library in local languages and puts digital content and books into the hands of students, educators, and leaders in 20+ countries. Headquartered in San Francisco, The Asia Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization working with public and private partners and receives funding from a diverse group of bilateral multilateral development agencies, foundations, corporations, and individuals. The Foundation was established in 1954 to undertake cultural and educational activities on behalf of the United States Government in ways not open to official U.S. agencies.
The Asia Foundation addresses issues on both a country and regional level through its permanent offices on the ground in the Asia Pacific region. The foundation’s staff are known for the depth of insights and granularity of knowledge on a variety of development challenges. Besides its offices across the region, the Foundation has an office in San Francisco and an office in Washington, D.C.
The Asia Foundation Development Fellows program is a dynamic and multifaceted learning program designed for highly talented Asian individuals, under age 40, to enhance their leadership skills, Asian development knowledge, professional networks, and international exposure. The program reflects the Foundation’s nearly seven-decade tradition of investing in the region’s most promising future leaders.
There are two options for applying, either in the Spring session or in the Fall session. The Spring session begins on the 18th of February and ends on the 1st of March, 2024. It will take place in Cambodia.
The Fall session begins on the 13th of October and ends on the 26th of October, 2024. It will take place in the United States.

- Fellows are offered a fixed number of one-on-one executive coaching sessions throughout their fellowship year.
Eligibilities
The Asia Foundation Development fellows must:
- Have a demonstrable record of experience and accomplishment related to The Asia Foundation’s fields of expertise: governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment and gender equality, environment and climate action, and regional cooperation;
- Be thoughtful, committed, respected, and inspirational leaders within their professional fields and within their larger community;
- Be under 40 years of age by January 1, 2024;
- Be conversant in English (TOEFL exam results are not required);
- Be available and able to participate in all program components on the program dates specified; and
- Be resident nationals or citizens of the following countries and regions where The Asia Foundation has programs: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pacific Islands, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam.
