The Henry L. Stimson Center’s South Asia Program is inviting applications for its 2024-2025 cohort of Junior Fellows. This opportunity is open to highly motivated graduating seniors or individuals who have completed their undergraduate or master’s degree within the past year.

The one-year, full-time fellowship aims to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of security issues in South Asia, opportunities to engage with the policy community in Washington and the region, and the experience of working in a dynamic think tank environment. Junior Fellows will benefit from close collaboration with senior staff and researchers while receiving a salary, health insurance, and transit benefits throughout the fellowship.

Junior Fellows will contribute to the program’s research, analysis, and policymaker engagement on topics such as deterrence, conflict risks, military modernization, and great-power competition in Southern Asia. Their responsibilities will include supporting research, publications, and programmatic activities, such as South Asian Voices, Strategic Learning initiatives, and public events or workshops. Fellows will also participate in professional development activities, engaging with leading experts, representing Stimson at events, honing technical skills, and conducting and publishing their own research.
This fellowship is designed to help emerging analysts build the research, analytical, writing, and project management skills necessary for success in fields related to peace and security in South Asia. Past Junior Fellows have advanced to roles at think tanks such as CSIS and CFR, positions in the U.S. government, and prestigious academic programs at institutions like MIT, the University of Chicago, Stanford, and Columbia.

Eligibilities
Requirements
- A strong background in South Asian politics, economics, or security; strategic studies and nuclear issues; international relations theory; or other social sciences.
- Demonstrated analytical, research, and writing skills.
- Ability to work independently and to collaborate with peers in a team environment.
- A record of academic excellence.
- Bachelor’s degree. All applicants must be eligible to work in the United States for the full twelve months of the fellowship following graduation.
Desirable Skills/Experience
- Precise editing skills (work experience in a university writing center or newspaper a plus).
- Experience living/working in South Asia and/or working in intercultural settings.
- Hindi, Urdu, or Mandarin (or other relevant) language skills.
- Data science skills.
- Event and/or project management experience.
- Web management experience/skills

- Two-page maximum.
- Include educational qualifications, study abroad experiences, extracurricular activities, and work experience.
- Unofficial Transcript(s):
- Provide academic records for undergraduate and Master’s coursework (if applicable).

- Letter of Recommendation:
- One letter from a professor or former employer.
- Should highlight the candidate’s qualifications, skills, and experiences relevant to the fellowship.

- Writing Sample:
- No more than two pages.
- Must address a topic related to South Asian political or security issues.
