The WFSA is the foremost global alliance of anesthesiologists, the specialist physicians dedicated to the total care of the patient before, during and after surgery. Anesthesiologists are leaders in teamwork and patient safety, and are experts in anesthesia and perioperative care, resuscitation, intensive care medicine and pain management.
Their vision is to make universal access to safe anesthesia. Their mission is to unite and empower anesthesiologists around the world to improve patient care. They deliver their mission through programmes that are implemented together with national, regional and specialty anesthesiology societies. They also work with other organizations that share our objectives, including, but not limited to, the World Health Organization, governments, non-governmental organizations, specialist medical organizations, academic institutions, patient groups, hospitals, and industry. Safe anesthesia and perioperative care are essential for safe surgery, and they welcome partnerships aimed at strengthening health systems and achieving universal health coverage.
Fellowships are undertaken by trained anesthesia providers who want to develop their careers by specializing or sub-specializing. The WFSA offers its Fellowships to anesthesiologists from low and middle-income countries to increase their skillset and become leaders for anesthesia once they return to their home countries. WFSA fellowships have a lasting impact both on the skills and professional development of the individuals but also their colleagues and patients back home. Pediatric Anesthesia Training in Africa (PATA), Abuja, is offering two 12-month Pediatric Anesthesia Fellowship positions starting September 2023. Preference will be given to young and upcoming anesthesiologists.
Fellows will work at the Department of Anesthesia at National Hospital Abuja. Teaching will be provided by local faculty and visiting specialists.
PATA is locally led and supported by the WFSA, the Nigerian Society of Anesthetists, and experienced partners from the global surgery and anesthesia space including Smile Train and the Vanderbilt University Medical Centre.
