The Canon Foundation in Europe awards up to 15 Fellowships each year to exceptionally talented scholars in Europe and Japan. While Japanese Fellows are supposed to conduct their research in Europe, European Fellows are intended to pursue a period of study in Japan. Fellowships from the Canon Foundation are available for a minimum of three months and a maximum of one year. The foundation supports all fields of research. There are no limitations or restrictions. Applicants do not have to be currently enrolled or employed at the time of applying.

European Canon Fellows are allowed to select their hosts in Japan as well as their host institutes. Japanese Canon Fellows traveling to Europe are afforded the same freedom. When a study plan and an agreement on cooperation have been achieved between the guest researcher and the potential host institution, applications for Canon Foundation study Fellowships may be submitted.

The Canon Foundation in Europe is a charitable organization that awards grants and actively works to foster cross-cultural and scholarly ties between Europe and Japan. The European headquarters of Canon, Canon Europa N.V., was founded on December 22nd, 1987, and it is registered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The Foundation was initially funded by Canon Europa N.V., although it is a legally and financially independent institution. The Foundation’s secretariat is located in Amstelveen, Netherlands. The advancement of science, culture, knowledge, and intercultural understanding between Europe and Japan is the goal of the Canon Foundation in Europe. Up to 15 Canon Foundation Research Fellowships should be awarded to postgraduate students and researchers each year in order to achieve this goal. Japanese researchers can conduct long-term studies in Europe thanks to a fellowship program for Europeans, and vice versa.

The average success rate is around 10%. Funding decisions are based on the quality of the research plan, the reference letters, and the host confirmation. The success rate is not influenced by gender, age, and nationality.
