In the aerospace sector globally, women make up about 25% of the workforce. Zonta International presents the Amelia Earhart Fellowship as part of its aim to ensure that women have equal access to all resources and are represented in positions of decision-making on a par with men.
In 1938, the Amelia Earhart Fellowship was created in the honor of Amelia Earhart, a famous pilot and Zontian. Up to 30 women pursuing PhD or postdoctoral degrees in aerospace engineering and space sciences are given the US$10,000 Fellowship each year. Any college or university that offers recognized post-graduate courses and degrees in these subjects may use it.
Applications for the Amelia Earhart Fellowships must be submitted online and include details about the applicants’ academic background, career objectives, and research plans. The candidates also provide three academic and/or professional references from professors (or supervisors) as well as their academic transcripts, which include all of the courses they took and their grades from all of the institutions and colleges they attended. The applications are examined and recommendations for recipients are made to the Zonta International Board (or the Executive Committee acting on its behalf) by the Zonta International Amelia Earhart Fellowship Committee, whose members are all former Fellows and Zontians.
Up to 30 awards are given to Fellows around the globe each year. Zonta has given 1,734 Amelia Earhart Fellowships worth more than $11.6 million to 1,305 women from 77 different countries since the program’s start in 1938. Their Fellows have gone on to work as astronauts, aerospace engineers, astronomers, teachers, geologists, entrepreneurs, and even the secretary of the US Air Force.

Eligibilities
- The fellowship is open to women of all nationalities.
- Be enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. program in aerospace engineering or space sciences.
- Applicants must not graduate from their Ph.D. or doctoral program before April 2025. Please note that post-doctoral research programs are not eligible for the Fellowship.
- To be eligible for the fellowship, one must have a superior academic record. This means that an individual must have a GPA of at least 3.0 (or equivalent).
- You must be enrolled in a full-time Ph.D. program in aerospace engineering or space sciences. This means that one must be taking at least 9 credits per semester.
- One must have completed at least one year of Ph.D. program. This means that an individual must have completed at least 18 credits.
- Demonstrate a commitment to research in aerospace engineering or space sciences.
- Applicants must not be a previous Amelia Earhart Fellow.
Application Process
- Visit the Zonta International website and download the application form. The application form is available in English and Spanish.
- Complete the application form and submit it along with the following supporting documents:
- Official transcripts from all universities/colleges attended
- Three letters of recommendation
- A personal statement
- A CV
- The application process can take some time, so it is important to start early.
