Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa (YSS) / Student Volunteers Foundation is wholly owned by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia and established in 2012 with the aim to inculcate the spirit of volunteerism and camaraderie among the students of tertiary education and to produce global student volunteer icons.
With the tagline “winning people’s hearts, mind and soul beyond borders”, YSS is committed through YSS’ five thrusts; to create volunteer leadership, to organise high impact volunteer programmes, to fortify the ecosystem of volunteerism, enhance strategic linkages and reinforce volunteer training.
YSS measures all volunteer initiatives and high impactful activities to meet the UN SDGs or Global Goals.
Benefits
- The YSS-ASEAN Students Volunteer Mission to Sarawak, Malaysia scheduled in July 2018 for three weeks, will bring together all ten ASEAN members and China in enhancing the people-to-people interaction, mobility and to strengthen linkages within ASEAN.
- This is in line with the aspiration of ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community that encourages volunteerism (Action Line E.1.ix).
- This volunteer mission engages ASEAN member nations and China in sharing the core values of ASEAN community.
- YSS focuses on capacity building where ASEAN+China student volunteers are trained physically and mentally through the implementation of concepts of “immersion” where they eat, live and breathe with the community; “the right volunteers for the right job” and “inclusiveness”.
- ASEAN+China student volunteers will come from all background of ethnicity, religion and varied discipline of study. They undergo experiential learning where they will develop valuable skills such as teamwork, leadership, project planning, time management, disaster and crisis management skills, improving their adaptability level, soft skills and proactivity.
- ASEAN member nations and China will accomplish internationalizing their students to produce progressive and dynamic individuals who must be “ethically and morally upright, spiritually grounded, compassionate and caring; appreciate the sustainable development and a healthy lifestyle” to become role model as future ASEAN and Asian leaders.
Eligibilities
The students must be from higher learning institutions, in various fields of study and background. Further criteria are as follows:
- Must be minimum 18 years old.
- Must be full-time students of higher learning institutions.
- Must be active in volunteer work in campus or in the community.
- Must be fit to participate in the mission.
- Must be a non-smoker and non-vape smoker.
- Must be free from any criminal record or any disciplinary offences.
- Must possess basic knowledge of ASEAN.
- Must be able to converse in English.
