Applications are open for the UONGOZI Institute Youth Leadership Competition 2025!

The Youth Leadership Competition is organised as a component of the African Leadership Forum (ALF) to provide a space for the youth of Africa and the next generation of leaders in the region to contribute to important discussions on leadership and sustainable development.

In each contest, African citizens between the age of 18 and 25 are asked to write about their perspectives on leadership as it relates to a theme tied to the ALF. ALF 2025 will be convened in Kampala, Uganda by H.E. Dr. Jakaya Kikwete, ALF Patron and fourth President of the United Republic of Tanzania, and H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, former Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, from 7 – 8 April. The theme will be “Realising sustainable development goals in Africa: Progress and way forward”.

‘Uongozi’ means leadership in Kiswahili, and inspiring and strengthening leadership is the core purpose of our organisation. Established in 2010 by the Governments of Tanzania and Finland, the Institute of African Leadership for Sustainable Development (commonly known as UONGOZI Institute) is dedicated to inspiring and equipping African leaders to deliver inclusive and sustainable solutions for their nations and the wider continent.

The Institute applies a holistic and mutually reinforcing approach to capacity development which recognises that leadership competencies are developed through a continuous, lifelong learning process. Its two strategic pillars – leadership and sustainable development – are addressed through four main areas: executive education, policy dialogues, action-oriented research, and technical support. Its clientele includes organisations as well as individuals from the public sector, private sector, and civil society.
