The Qualification Round 2022 of the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition has opened for submissions! Use your skills and astronomy knowledge to win certificates, awards, and prizes. IAAC gives you the unique opportunity to show your knowledge and astronomy skills in one of the biggest astronomy competitions for students from all around the world.

All participants receive participation certificates. The best students receive the 1. prize, 2. prize, and 3. prize with a cash award of 150 USD, 100 USD, and 50 USD (both for the youth and junior category). Furthermore, the most outstanding participants from each country receive a special national award to honour their excellence. There are also special school awards and awards for ambassadors. In order to participate in the International Astronomy and Astrophysics Competition, you have to be a high-school or university student. Students from all grades and all countries are invited to participate! There are two age categories:
- Junior: under 18 years on 13. May 2022 (submission deadline)
- Youth: over 18 years on 13. May 2022 (submission deadline)
Depending on your age category you will have to score more points to qualify for the next round. To solve the problems you should be interested in astronomy, smart, and creative.
The competition uses the possibilities of the modern world to allow all students to participate regardless of nation, region, school, or affiliation. Every student may participate independently – there is no affiliation of your school or teacher to IAAC required to participate in this competition.
The pre-final round includes two research problem types. They require participants to get in touch with real scientific research papers and learn about recent scientific results to solve the problems. They encourage students for more advanced science and give them insights into actual research material.

- However, there are two age categories: Junior/Youth (under/over 18 years on the day of the application deadline).
- You should be smart, open-minded, and creative to solve science problems.
Application Process
1. Qualification Round: The qualification round 2022 consists of five astronomy problems and you can submit your solutions online until 13. May 2022. All participants receive certificates.
2. Pre-Final Round: Successful participants can register for the pre-final round: You have four days to solve the eight challenging problems of the pre-final round.
3. Final Round: Successful finalists can participate in the final round: You will take a supervised exam of 20 minutes. The winners receive certificates and cash prizes worth over 700 USD.
