The 2023 SCAR Visiting Scholar scheme is open for applications! SCAR Visiting Scholarships are for mid- to late-career stage scientists and academics (at least 5 years after completing their Ph.D.) who are involved in Antarctic research, providing the opportunity for them to undertake a short-term visit (1 to 4 weeks) to an institute(s) in another SCAR member country, to provide training and mentoring.

The core purpose of the Scheme is to build capacity in countries with smaller or less-developed Antarctic research programs. Visits can be either to smaller and developing programs or from smaller and developing programs, so the capacity-building process can be proposed either way. The scheme is for any scientists and academics whose research contributes to SCAR’s objectives, as embodied in the Science Groups and Scientific Research Programmes.

The Visiting Scholar Scheme complements the early-career SCAR Fellowship Scheme by providing scientists and academics with the opportunity to intensify collaboration amongst SCAR member countries and contribute to SCAR’s objectives.

The study of Antarctica and the Southern Ocean and their role in the global Earth system has never been more critical as the region is experiencing dramatic changes that have global implications. The Antarctic region is a matchless ‘natural laboratory’ for vital scientific research that is important in its own right and impossible to achieve elsewhere on the planet.

SCAR encourages excellence in all aspects of Antarctic research by developing transformational scientific programs that address compelling topics and emerging frontiers in Antarctic science of regional and global importance.

SCAR initiates, facilitates, and coordinates international cooperation in scientific research conducted in and from the Antarctic region and on the role of Antarctica in the Earth system.  Much of SCAR’s work is carried out through its subsidiary groups – the permanent Science Groups (SGs), Scientific Research Programmes (SRPs), Expert Groups, Action Groups, Advisory Groups, and groups co-sponsored with other organizations.
