The European Union (EU) is a supranational political and economic union of 27 member states that are located primarily in Europe. The union has a total area of 4,233,255 km2 (1,634,469 sq mi) and an estimated total population of over 448 million. The EU has often been described as a sui generis political entity (without precedent or comparison) combining the characteristics of both a federation and a confederation.
The union was established along with its citizenship when the Maastricht Treaty came into force in 1993 and was subsequently incorporated as an international law juridical person upon entry into force of the Treaty of Lisbon in 2009, but its beginnings may be traced to its earliest predecessors incorporated primarily by a group of founding states known as the Inner Six (Belgium, France, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and West Germany) at the start of modern institutionalized European integration in 1948 and onwards, namely to the Western Union (WU, 1954 renamed Western European Union, WEU), the International Authority for the Ruhr (IAR), the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), the European Economic Community (EEC, 1993 renamed European Community, EC) and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), established, respectively, by the 1948 Treaty of Brussels, the 1948 London Six-Power Conference, the 1951 Treaty of Paris, the 1957 Treaty of Rome and the 1957 Euratom Treaty. These increasingly amalgamated bodies, later known collectively as the European Communities have grown since, along with their legal successor, the EU, both in size through accessions of further 21 states as well as in power through acquisitions of various policy areas to their remit by the virtue of the abovementioned treaties, as well as numerous other ones, such as the Modified Brussels Treaty, the Merger Treaty, the Single European Act, the Treaty of Amsterdam and the Treaty of Nice. In 2012, the EU was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
Established in 2012, the EU Prize for Journalism is an annual event that encourages professionalism and ethical conduct in Georgian journalism. The Special Prize for conflict-sensitive journalism rewards media outlets contributing to confidence building and peace and is handed out by the European Union Monitoring Mission. The rules of the EU Prize for Journalism have been inspired by the principles of the Georgian Charter of Journalistic Ethics and seek to encourage professionalism and ethics in Georgian Journalism.

- The winners of the first seven categories will receive a cash prize of approximately 5,200 GEL each.
- The winner of the EUMM Special Prize will receive a one-month fellowship at the Institute of War and Peace Reporting in London.
Eligibilities
- The EU Prize for Journalism will be awarded in the following categories:
- Best story in print or online media;
- Best feature story in broadcast or online media;
- Best investigative story in print, online, or broadcast media;
- Best blog, opinion, or column in print, online, or broadcast media;
- The most innovative and original piece of work in print, broadcast, or online media;
- Best documentary photo reflecting EU values;
- Best Student work in print, online, or broadcast media;
- The EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism will be awarded for the best conflict-sensitive journalistic work contributing to confidence-building and peace in the context of armed conflicts in Georgia.
Application Process
1. For the best story (A), feature story (B), investigative story (C), blog opinion or column (D), the most innovative and original work (E), Best student work (I) in print or online media participants must submit:
- An electronic file (link) of the submission with the name of the applicant and the category clearly marked;
- An electronic file with a photocopy of the print edition or a link and screenshot from an online edition to prove that it was published.
2. For the best feature story (B) investigative story (C), the most innovative and original work (E). Best student work (I) in broadcast or online media participants must submit:
- An electronic file of the submission with the name of the applicant and the category clearly marked. In case of large files, applicants can submit permanent online links if available or upload them on YouTube and submit the link;
- A script of the video.
- A permanent link and/or a screenshot of the submission to prove that it was published.
- A permanent screenshot of the submission to prove that it was published within the deadlines required.
3. For the best documentary photo participants must submit:
- High-quality electronic .jpg file of the submission with the name of the applicant and category clearly marked. Images must not include any embedded marks, logos, names, or borders. In the case of large files, applicants can submit permanent online links if available or upload the files on Flickr and submit the link;
- A brief caption of the image (max 250 words), along with the title and the date of the publication in which the photo was published;
- An electronic file with the photocopy of the print edition or a screenshot to prove that it was published;
4. For the best Student work participants must submit:
- Proof of bachelor’s student status, from a private or state university accredited in Georgia.
5. For the best conflict-sensitive journalistic work contributing to confidence-building and peace in the context of armed conflicts in Georgia, displaying high standards of journalistic ethics and professionalism (The EUMM Special Prize for Peace Journalism) participants must apply in the same way and submit an online Application Form with the same supporting materials as is mentioned above for other categories.
