Monash University in collaboration with Oxfam in Bangladesh is offering 3 Ph.D. opportunities.
Topics:
1. Human-Computer Interaction for the empowerment of disadvantaged communities
This PhD project will contribute to the overall theme of PROTIC II of Digital Citizenship for Disadvantaged Communities. As a cross-disciplinary inquiry, it will use methods and concepts from community informatics, Information and CommunicationTechnologies for Development (ICT4D),design, the social sciences, human-computer interaction, and computer science. They are seeking candidates with relevant background and interests spanning computer science, interaction design, or human computer interaction, and experience working in Bangladesh.
2. Informatics for the empowerment of disadvantaged communities
This PhD project will contribute to the overall theme of PROTIC II of Digital Citizenship for Disadvantaged Communities. As a cross-disciplinary inquiry, it will use methods and concepts from community informatics, Information and Communication Technologies for Development (ICT4D),design, the social sciences, human-computer interaction, and computer science. They are seeking candidates with relevant background and interests in community informatics, with a particular emphasis on digital continuity, digital literacy or cybersecurity, and experience working in Bangladesh.
3. Recordkeeping for Empowerment in Bangladeshi Rural Communities
The purpose of this PhD project is to explore how Bangladeshi rural communitiesaccess, create, and manage information and their preferences for oral, written or digital tools to preserve information for the medium to long-term. The emphasis of the project will be to support and strengthen locally-developed practices that are grounded in cultural traditions and preferences and to investigate the factors that influence the choice of tools by different groups and the longevity of documentation practices.

Oxfam is a confederation of 17 interdependent organizations, working in more than 90 countries. n 1970, Oxfam as in Oxfam GB first started its journey in Bangladesh by assisting the victims of a deadly cyclone. Oxfam played a commendable role during the War of Liberation in 1971 by providing food, shelter, and medicine to millions of displaced people.

Eligibilities

For Human-Computer Interaction for the empowerment of disadvantaged communities topic Candidates should:

  • Have a strong academic background in computer science or human-computer interaction equivalent to a first-class
  • Honors degree, and/or a Master’s degree by research in a relevant field;
  • Have an understanding and experience of development work and experience working with NGOs and local community organizations;
  • Be able to demonstrate a high level of capacity to conduct participatory research with various stakeholders in Bangladesh, including marginalized communities;
  • Be fluent in English (speaking, reading, writing) and Bengali. Fieldwork in Bangladesh will be required;
For Recordkeeping for Empowerment in Bangladeshi Rural Communities topic Candidates should:
  • Have a strong academic background in information and/or social sciences equivalent to a first-class Honours degree and/or a Master’s degree by research in a relevant field;
  • Have an understanding and experience of development work in rural Bangladesh and experience working with community organisations;
  • Be able to demonstrate a high level of capacity to conduct participatory research with various stakeholders in Bangladesh;
  • Have an understanding of, or willingness to learn, recordkeeping informatics;
  • Be bilingual English/Bengali. Fieldwork in Bangladesh will be required;
  • Have excellent time management skills and be able to work independently;
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills.
