Asia Kakehashi Scholarship 2021 in Japan.
Purpose of this Program:
- Nourish global competence of Japanese high school students through intercultural experiences without going abroad;
- Asian high school students to experience living Japanese education and culture;
- Building high school students’ network among Asia;
- Develop the leaders for our “future Asia”.
From the year 2018 to 2023, the government of Japan provides scholarship for Asian high school students who demonstrate strong potential of leadership to act as a bridge between Japan and their country. Participants will be funded to live and study in Japan for 8 months starting from August 2021. For the year 2021, 250 students will be provided this Japanese government scholarship.

Whether you live with a host family or in a dorm, you will attend a Japanese high school and make friends with your Japanese peers. All this will help you improve your Japanese language skills, your academic prospects, and your intercultural fluency.
The Asia Kakehashi Project (kakehashi is Japanese for “bridging”) is the initiative announced by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in 2017 to strengthen relations between Japan and the rest of Asia. The program provides full scholarships for Asian high school students to live and study in Japan. The first 100 students arrived in Japan in August 2018, and the program is gradually expanding in numbers and length of stay.
AFS Japan manages all aspects of the program, including identifying volunteer host families and dorms for student placement, providing intercultural training, and supporting students as they adjust to living in a new country. Students are selected based on academic achievement, financial need, interest in the Japanese language and culture, as well as the potential to be future leaders of positive change in their own communities.

Content: Japanese high school experiences with dormitory-stay or homestay
Fee: Full scholarship sponsored by the Japanese Government
Expenses not covered by the scholarship include, but are not limited, to:
* Vaccinations and other medical examinations and documentation
* Travel expenses to the regional Japanese consulate to obtain a visa
* Additional spending money
* Fees for additional or oversized luggage
Support: All participants will be supported by AFS Japan’s experienced local volunteers and professional staff during the program in Japan. Pre-program support will be provided by AFS/NGO under the AFS policies and guidelines.

Eligibilities
Applicants to the program in 2021 must meet the following criteria:
a) between 15 and 18 years of age, born after April 2, 2003, and before April 1, 2006;
b) Citizen of one of the countries/regions listed below at the time of application;
c) Obtained a minimum of 60% marks in principle in all subjects in the latest examination at school and an overall minimum average of 60% marks in all subjects for the past two years;
d) Learners of Japanese;
e) Demonstrate a strong potential of leadership to act as a bridge between the home country and Japan during and after the program; and not have participated in the ASIA KAKEHASHI program before.
f) Priority will be given to students of families with low incomes.
