Job Responsibilities

  • The BBC News Bangla News Editor will lead a team of 30 language journalists in Dhaka/Calcutta and will report to the Executive News Editor based in London.
  • The successful candidate will be editorially responsible for the multimedia output of the Service in Bengali, ensuring content on all platforms meets the highest standards of journalism and is delivered in compliance with BBC Editorial Guidelines.
  • Responsible for building team spirit within permanent or temporary teams; ensuring the best use of individual skills. Encouraging team members to think about potential improvements.
  • Sets team and individual objectives, as well as clear expectations about required performance levels, rewards success and addresses performance issues promptly and fairly, treats team members with respect.
  • Seek ways to increase diversity in our workforce and to ensure that our output reflects the audiences we serve.
  • Responsible for ensuring safe working practices and the observance of BBC’s health and safety regulations, including completing risk assessments.
  • In consultation with the senior leadership team, the News Editor will implement the overall strategy for BBC News Bangla in line with the objectives of the World Service.

Eligibilities

  • Experience in a senior editor role with proven track record of successfully leading Bengali-speaking teams and the ability to develop and implement innovative approaches to news and current affairs content.
  • Proven editorial judgement, able to make sound decisions promptly.
  • A full command and up to date knowledge of written and spoken Bengali as first (or equivalent) language as well as complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • A detailed understanding of current techniques and technology for newsgathering and production. An ability to use new technologies to create opportunities to enhance output and improve working practices.
  • Ability to translate organization and department goals into action plans and lead the team to deliver on those goals.
  • Demonstrable leadership in building diverse teams.
  • Knowledge of operational challenges (if any) in carrying out impartial journalism in Bangladesh and ensuring to seek editorial or legal guidance if necessary
  • Proven experience in breaking news stories as well as producing features, investigations and original journalism about Bangladesh, South Asia and global news and current affairs
