SANEM is going to organize 5th Annual Economists’ Conference (SAEC) 2020 with the theme of “Institutions for Development”.
SANEM is now widely recognized that to ensure quality growth and sustain economic progress, institutions are quintessential. The South Asia region has frequently witnessed inadequacy and inefficiency of institutions preponderating economic gain. It is high time, they reflected on this scenario and objectively assessed the current conditions so that they can reach definitive conclusions which would be useful for policymakers, stakeholder and development partners.
Since its inception in 2016, SAEC has become one of the most prominent regional forums for academic and intellectual exchange. The 4th SAEC, held in February of 2019, saw huge participation of around 300 attendees including economists, scholars, journalists and students.

SANEM aims to promote quality economic research among academicians, researchers, policy advocates, students and young aspiring economists. SANEM proudly announces the success of the 1st SAEC 2016 on “Bangladesh: Way towards a Middle Income Country” held on 20 February 2016, the 2nd SAEC 2017 on “Managing Growth for Social Inclusion’’ held on 18-19 February 2017, the 3rd SAEC 2018 on “Leave no one behind in South Asia” held on 17-18 February 2018, and the 4th SAEC 2019 on “Governing New Challenges: Inclusive Development, Trade, and Finance” held on 16-17 February 2019. The past conferences were graced with the presence of renowned economists, policymakers and participants from home and abroad. A substantial number of well-thought-out ideas were presented through quality research papers.
The two-day conference will hold sessions on different themes where scholars and economists from Bangladesh and other countries of South Asia will present research papers. SANEM believes, to guide the policy discourse of Bangladesh and South Asia region towards adopting an inclusive, symbiotic and research-driven approach, it is important to initiate nuanced dialogues and discussions. Thus, along with scholars, the conference will invite policymakers, government officials, elected public office holders and development practitioners. Prominent economists would be invited as keynote speakers and two eminent economists would be honoured for their contribution in the field of economics.
The conference will also host a special session for young students of economics, giving them an opportunity to present their research work and interact with experts.
