UNICEF, originally called the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund in full, now officially United Nations Children’s Fund, is an agency of the United Nations responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children worldwide. The agency is among the most widespread and recognizable social welfare organizations in the world, with a presence in 192 countries and territories. UNICEF’s activities include providing immunizations and disease prevention, administering treatment for children and mothers with HIV, enhancing childhood and maternal nutrition, improving sanitation, promoting education, and providing emergency relief in response to disasters.

Migration is an expanding global reality, increasing in scale and complexity over the last few years. Between 2005 and 2015, the number of child refugees worldwide, more than doubled from 4 million to 9 million. 1 in 2 refugees in the world is a child. 1 in 5 international migrants is younger than 20 years. While migration bears acute protection risks for many children, particularly if unaccompanied or undocumented, migration is also an empowering experience for millions of children who migrate safely and regularly within their countries or regions, enriching the societies they leave and join.

The UNICEF Migration Team based in the Programme Group is recruiting an intern to support across different programmatic areas in support of the Headquarters’ functions on coordination, knowledge management, policy and programming guidance and partnerships.

Based in New York, the Intern will support the Knowledge Management Specialist and the Programme Specialist on global coordination of UNICEF action across HQ, regional and country offices, by supporting the coordination of the Hub’s capacity building trainings and events,  UNICEF’s Global Migration Practise Group, by working with Regional and Country Offices to produce a monthly global newsletter, by supporting data analysis and visualization as well as providing background research and analysis upon demand – covering topics such as climate change and displacement, solutions for internal displacement, and inclusion of migrant and displaced children into national health, education, social protection and child protection systems. In particular, the intern will support in the design, planning and execution of a high-level global convening on climate-related displacement and children to strategically position children on the move within the global climate change discourse.
