“The rebellion’s underbelly.” That’s how Swedish journalist Kim Wall characterised her distinct style of covering globally defined subcultures. Through the Kim Wall Memorial Fund, the International Women’s Media Foundation (IWMF) works with Kim’s family and friends to ensure that the stories she loved get told. Kim introduced incredibly interesting people that others would have missed, whether covering topics like the underground market for digital content and culture in Cuba, the politics of opportunity inside Kampala’s developing Chinatown, or the degree to which women Tamil Tiger combatants in Sri Lanka were let down by the promises of a feminist utopia. The Memorial Fund assists other reporters who share Kim’s spirit of adventure in locating these significant but underreported stories.
Kim’s career as an overseas journalist was brief but impressive, covering stories from all around the world. Harper’s, The New York Times, Foreign Policy, The Atlantic, TIME, Slate, Vice, and Guardian were among the magazines that carried her material. In 2016, Kim, an IWMF fellow and grantee, received assistance from the organisation to report from Sri Lanka and Uganda.
Since 2018, women’s and nonbinary journalists who continue Kim Wall’s legacy through their reporting have been given $5,000 reporting awards by the Kim Wall Memorial Fund. Executive director of the IWMF Elisa Lees Muñoz said, “Kim Wall was a dedicated journalist, and loved by our network of staff and journalists who worked closely with her.” She was unwavering in her search for significant and occasionally odd stories.
Kim’s parents, brother Tom Wall, partner Ole Stobbe, and friends Mansi Choksi, May Jeong, Adam Perez, and Dhiya Kuriakose founded the Kim Wall Memorial Fund. This foundation was established with the understanding that Kim would have preferred more women to face life head-on. The IWMF hopes to assist Kim in bending the world towards her vision by means of this funding.

- The IWMF’s Kim Wall Memorial Fund will provide $5,000 grants to journalists whose work embodies the spirit of Kim’s reporting.
Eligibilities
- Affiliated or freelance women or non-binary journalists with one (1) or more years of professional experience working in news media from anywhere in the world. Internships do not count toward professional experience.
- Applicants must have excellent written and verbal English skills in order to fully participate in and benefit from the program. However, reporting may be published in any language.
- Applicants must be able to show proof of interest from an editor or have a proven track record of publication in prominent media outlets.
- Grants will be awarded to cover reporting-related costs including travel, logistics, insurance, visa fees, professional stipends and payments for producers, translators, etc. The IWMF does not cover the cost of equipment purchase or rental and cannot support academic research or research for academic publication.
The IWMF believes that gender does not conform to one notion and inclusive of all women, non-binary and gender non-conforming journalists.
