Currently in its fourth year, the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Environmental Photography Award is an annual competition designed to honour photographers who utilise their skills to promote environmental protection. Photographers are encouraged to consider how humans interact with the natural world and how human and planetary health are intertwined.

The prize includes the title of Environmental Photographer of the Year 2024, a prize fund of €11,000, and the presentation of 36 photographs in a high-caliber photography book as well as an international touring exhibition that will debut in the Principality of Monaco.

The jury will select 36 photographs from the thirty-six submitted in the five categories. These photos will be included in the Award book as well as the Environmental Photography Award 2024 exhibition. The jury will select a winning photograph as well as second- and third-placed “Jury’s Distinction” images for each of the five categories. One of those five category winners will get the Grand Prize and the title of Environmental Photographer of the Year 2024 from the jury. At the inauguration of the exhibition in the Principality of Monaco in June 2024, the Grand Prize winner, category winners, Public Award winner, and Students’ Choice winner will all be made public announcements.

An online public poll of all the shortlisted photos will determine which shot receives the Public Award. It will be open to everyone for two weeks starting on April 1, 2024. It will be available from this page and sent to all prize applicants through email. High school students in the Principality of Monaco cast their votes for the Students’ Choice award. Following a presentation to them by the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation to promote awareness and discuss the important environmental concerns confronting us, they will be invited to take part in a dedicated online poll of the chosen photographs. The Foundation and its partners will heavily publicise the prizes in the international press and on social media, and all winners will get two free copies of the Environmental Photography Award 2024 book.

The Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation annually awards the Environmental Photography Award at a public display in the Principality of Monaco following the conclusion of the competition. In order to convey to the public the environmental principles held dear by the Sovereign and the Principality and to raise awareness of the challenges, large-format prints of the shortlisted and winning images are displayed in the centre of the tourism area. The show then makes an international tour, helping to raise awareness of both the Foundation and the Environmental Photography Award.
