The World Health Organization (WHO) is supporting Fiji in building climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable healthcare facilities (CRESHCFs). CRESHCFs are designed to withstand climate change impacts such as sea level rise, extreme weather events, and water scarcity. They also incorporate environmentally sustainable practices, such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, and renewable energy.
The WHO is working with the Fijian government and other partners to develop and implement a CRESHCF framework for Fiji. This framework will include guidance on the design, construction, and operation of CRESHCFs. The WHO is also providing technical assistance to Fiji in developing and implementing CRESHCF pilots.
The CRESHCF program is expected to make a number of contributions to Fiji’s efforts to adapt to climate change and protect the health of its people. CRESHCFs will help to ensure that healthcare facilities remain operational during climate change events and that they are more resilient to damage. CRESHCFs will also help to reduce the environmental impact of the healthcare sector and to promote sustainable healthcare practices.

One of the CRESHCF pilots in Fiji is the Nadi Hospital redevelopment project. The new Nadi Hospital is being designed and constructed to be climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable. It will include features such as a rainwater harvesting system, solar panels, and a green roof.
Another CRESHCF pilot in Fiji is the refurbishment of the Labasa Hospital. The refurbishment project will include features such as energy-efficient lighting and appliances, a waste management system, and a rainwater harvesting system.
The CRESHCF program in Fiji is still in its early stages, but it has the potential to make a significant contribution to Fiji’s efforts to adapt to climate change and protect the health of its people.

Eligibilities
- Educational Qualifications required:
- Essential: Advanced degree (Master’s) in public health, environmental health, environmental engineering or related field.
- Desirable: PhD in public health, environmental health, environmental engineering or related field from a reputable university.
- Experience required:
- Essential: 8-10 years’ work experience and advanced knowledge of climate change and health impacts and adaptation in the context of Pacific Island countries or small island developing states; experience in undertaking evaluation/review of national policies, plans, guidance, or guidelines required; and work experience in the WHO Western Pacific Region including Pacific Island countries or Small Island Developing States (SIDS) is desirable.
- Desirable: Work experience in the WHO Western Pacific Region including Pacific Island countries or Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
- Skills /Technical skills and knowledge:
- Specific technical knowledge on undertaking evaluation/review of national policies/plans/guidance/guidelines; strong analytical skills and general knowledge of health sector stakeholders, climate change adaptation and mitigation planning and implementation.
- Language requirements:
- Expert level of written and spoken English is required.
