Applications for postgraduate study in South Africa in 2024 are being accepted by the Canon Collins Trust in collaboration with the Sol Plaatje Educational Project. For Masters and PhD programmes, funding is available for a maximum of two and three years, respectively. Academic reports and satisfactory progress are requirements for funding to continue. Canon Collins Trust will only give scholarships to students pursuing studies in one of three fields in 2024:
- Justice, which includes Climate Justice, Law, Economics and Politics
- Education policy and practice
- Humanities, which includes Literature, History, Anthropology and the Arts
Sometimes, interdisciplinary courses and PhD programmes defy simple classification. Application decision-makers are advised to exercise their best judgement. However, submissions that plainly don’t fit into these categories (such MBAs, medical sciences, sports sciences, and applied sciences) won’t be given any thought when it comes to awards. Climate justice will be a top priority in 2024. Applications for scholarships connected to climate justice may be in the science or applied science fields as long as they can show how they are pertinent to those issues.
The Trust will consider a number of factors when choosing scholars, including academic merit, financial necessity, and the ability to advance southern African education. The following criteria will be used to evaluate applicants for the 2024 Canon Collins Sol Plaatje Programme based on the information they provide on their application form:
- References and Academic Record: The minimal requirements for applicants are an upper second-class (merit) undergraduate degree or an honours degree, along with strong recommendations.
- Future effects: All applicants must explain how receiving the scholarship and furthering their education will help them to support free and equitable societies in southern Africa.
- Experience at Work:The trust prioritise submissions where there is a clear connection between the applicant’s proposed course of study and theirs prior education and employment.
- Having leadership qualities: Canon Collins places a lot of stress on a person’s capacity for leadership. The applicants will be required to give examples of how they have grown as leaders in the company, in the classroom, or in their personal lives. Priority will be given to candidates who can discuss a situation in which they used their abilities to create a common vision or strategy, develop strategic alliances and networks, assist peers and mentor others, and/or produce outcomes.
- Compatibility with the Trust’s goals: The trust will give preference to candidates who can most convincingly show how their proposed trajectory and future goals are consistent with the Trust’s ideals.
