The RSTMH 2023 Early Career Grants Programme is now open for applications. Applications are welcomed from early career researchers and global health professionals based anywhere in the world, who have not had research funding of £5,000 (GBP) or more in their own name before.
The projects can be on any topic related to tropical medicine and global health, from across the research spectrum of lab, translation, implementation, and policy, and should take up to one year.
The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene is a charity and membership society that has been dedicated to improving tropical medicine and global health since 1907. They are governed by a Board of Trustees and six Committees.
Their ambition is to save lives and improve health around the world through increased access and greater equity in global healthcare. Through their activities, they help further their member’s careers and bring together their collective knowledge and their expertise to achieve change within the sector in policy, funding, or research.
Their members, based in over 90 countries, are at all stages of their careers, working across a multitude of disciplines, and from a range of sectors. They are a small team of eight but are supported by around 1,000 volunteers across the world in delivering their work, including a network of Country and Student Ambassadors.
Their activities include publishing two internationally renowned, peer-reviewed journals and delivering and supporting meetings and events around the world. They also provide grants annually to early career researchers and recognize success in the sector through several medals and awards.
In September 2017 they launched their five-year strategy. The strategy was developed following a six-month comprehensive review involving RSTMH’s Board of Trustees, staff team, volunteers, members and Fellows, former members and non-members.
Their mission is to be at the heart of the tropical medicine and global health community, providing the knowledge and networks, across all disciplines, that drive impact. Their scope of work has been constantly adapting to the changing face of tropical medicine and global health. In this strategy, they use the Sustainable Development Goals as their context and recognize the importance of animal and planetary health, and the underlying social, structural, economic, and environmental factors that determine health around the globe as part of their scope of work.

Eligibilities
- Researcher or global health professional early in a research career and working in or interested in tropical medicine or global health.
- Applicants must not have received research funding of £5,000 or more in their own name before.
- Applicants can be of any nationality and are based anywhere in the world.
- Willing to carry out research under supervision.
- Have the ambition to develop knowledge of research methodologies and discipline.
- Have demonstrated a good understanding of a field of study.
- Demonstrate the ability to produce data under supervision.
- Use critical analysis, and evaluation and be able to synthesize new and complex ideas.
- Competently explain the outcome of their research and the value thereof to colleagues.
Note:
- Only RSTMH members can receive the funding, but anyone can apply.
- If successful, applicants who are not already members of RSTMH will have their membership funded by one of the partners of the organizer, or RSTMH will deduct it from the awardee’s award.

Note:
- They are hosting a webinar open for all to hear more about the Programme and application process.
- They are planning a series of more detailed online sessions on aspects of the application form for RSTMH members in February and March of 2023 that will include developing a research question, forming a budget, selecting the best methodology, and determining realistic outcomes.
