The International Max Planck Research School for Advanced Methods in Process and Systems Engineering (IMPRS ProEng) is a graduate school jointly run by the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systems (MPI) and the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg (OVGU). In their structured PhD program, talented junior scientists have the opportunity to obtain a doctorate under excellent research conditions, a multidisciplinary environment and close scientific supervision.

Through an innovative concept of combining cutting-edge mathematical and systems-oriented engineering research driven by challenging questions arising from the analysis, design and optimization of chemical and biochemical processes, the school has been bringing together researchers from various engineering areas, natural sciences and mathematics. We investigate problems of process and systems engineering, characterized by both high complexity and high practical relevance.
Apart from a well-balanced extensive curriculum designed to train both scientific and soft skills, the IMPRS ProEng supports doctoral candidates in conducting part of their research at their international partner institutions. Their working language is English and the doctoral degree is awarded by the Otto von Guericke University.
All their doctoral candidates receive a standard working contract (OVGU) or support contract (MPI) with payment and benefits in accordance with a public collective agreement (TVL or TVöD). Your salary is based on TVL/TVöD E13, 75%.
The IMPRS Magdeburg offers young researchers a stimulating atmosphere for research in a highly international environment. They provide a structured framework. This means that apart from researching, writing and successfully defending their thesis, students are required to achieve at least 30 credit points to complete the IMPRS program.
Through an innovative concept of combining cutting-edge mathematical and systems-oriented engineering research driven by challenging questions arising from the analysis, design and optimization of chemical and biochemical processes, the school has been bringing together students from various Engineering areas, Natural Sciences, and Mathematics.
Based on their specific backgrounds, students select their PhD topics. Their structured PhD program provides interdisciplinary support for developing creativity, innovative thinking, and developing skills needed for independent and high-level scientific work.
